Tango Survey

Before we get onto all the news and updates for this week, I have a small favour to ask of you... especially - but by no means exclusively - to those of you that read this newsletter but don't dance Tango.

In order to help us market our classes more effectively and to encourage new people to try our classes, I've put together a short survey to see what people know - or think they know - about Tango. A few people have filled it out already, but the more answers we get the better we will be able to understand what we need to do to get tango to appeal to as wide an audience as possible.

To open the survey, click this link:

Open the Argentine Tango Survey

There is no requirement to personalise your answers, and it should only take abut 5 minutes to complete. Please pass on the link to anyone else you think might be interested, and many thanks in advance for your time.

Herstmonceux Castle Tango Weekend

No, this isn't one of our events, but a number of you have been asking when tickets to this event are going on sale. We have been told that they will go live on the website from 2PM on MONDAY 10th JUNE, so now you know! See www.tangobootcamp.co.uk for details.

Summer Ball, Cream Tea Milonga, Saturday Matinee Milonga, Workshops, Bootcamp, BBQ, and on-site accommodation. It's all happening at Herstmonceux on the 20th & 21st July.

Sound, lighting, and technical services will again be provided by us as The Tango Underground, and DJ Graham may well make an appearance in the Neo room. We will update you with details nearer the time.

Class Theme This Week

South Norwood and Sevenoaks classes are running this week, and the theme of the classes will be "Dancing in a milonga".

Revision Videos

We are finally back on track with filming our revision videos, and the last couple of weeks' videos will be available on our YouTube channel very soon. Search for TangoSynthesis on YouTube or see the link on our website. Don't forget to subscribe to get notification of anything we upload.

Back to Normal

Welcome back to our newsletter, after a short break whilst we were away at the tango festival in Tonbridge last weekend. It was a fantastic three days and it was great to see so many of you there (even if I only managed to wave at some of you across the room and didn't get to chat). I'll write something about it on the blog later on.

The cluster of bank holidays and random closures that was May this year is over, and so both of our classes are back and running this week on their normal schedule. So we are at South Norwood on Tuesday and Sevenoaks on Thursday, both starting at 8pm.

Class Theme This Week

This week's class theme is "Enrosques and Energised Giros"

Revision Videos

We a bit behind with filming our videos as we were busy with other commitments and then there was a tango festival to distract us! We'll catch up this week with any luck.

Temporary Closures

Firstly, a reminder that there are a few venue closures in May to put in your diary...

  • 2nd May - Sevenoaks - Hall is in use for local elections (don't forget to vote!)
  • 6th May - Tunbridge Wells - Bank Holiday so there will be no class
  • 23rd May - Sevenoaks - Hall is in use for EU Elections (again, don't forget to vote!)

We will try to keep you informed of any changes on a week by week basis, but make sure you check the diary or the app before heading out.

Cinema Advertising

If you have been to Screen25 in South Norwood recently you might have seen our cinema advert for the Stanley Halls class nights running before the main film. If you've missed it then you can find it on our YouTube channel, but here's a version that covers both our venues. Feel free to share it on any social media platform you like.

Class Theme This Week

We change our class theme every Tuesday, so Stanley Halls is the first venue where we teach a new class. So for this week the class themes are...

  • Monday: Turning Ganchos into Leg Wraps
  • Tuesday: Promenades and Pivots
  • (There is no class on Thursday; see above)

Tango Underground - X-Tango in May

Tickets for May's X-Tango Neolonga in our new Otford venue are on sale now. Go to www.tangounderground.dance for details.

Social Media

If you do social media and want to follow us on there, you can find TangoSynthesis on these platforms:

  • Facebook
  • YouTube

Please search for us on all these platforms, and subscribe, like, follow, share, and join in.

Regular Classes - Everyone is Welcome

Our regular class nights are Tuesday in South Norwood and Thursday in Sevenoaks, and beginners are always welcome. There are no courses to start or specific "first day" evenings as we begin every session with an hour of fundamentals (8pm-9pm). Then we move into the improvers & intermediates class (9pm-10pm) where we do something a little more challenging, and this is followed by up to an hour of practise time if you want it.  Entry is £9 for the whole evening.

So whether you are completely new to dance and want to give tango a try, or encountered tango at one of our dance events and would like to know more, or even if you have been dancing tango for years and want to try a class that might be a bit different, come and say hello.

You can find our full diary on this website with details of everything we're doing for the next few months, but see below for the relevant things happening at our main venues.

Both of our regular classes are running as usual this week, at South Norwood on Tuesday and Sevenoaks on Thursday.

We are also in Showfields Hall, Tunbridge Wells on Monday night, with Learn to Tango Kent.

The Easter Season

Well, it's not really a 'season' as such, but I had to call this section something!

The next few weeks are full of bank holidays, elections, and tango festivals, so keep a close eye on the diary to see what days we are open and if there are any last minute closures. The ones we know about so far are...

  • 2nd May - Sevenoaks - Hall is in use for local elections
  • 6th May - Tunbridge Wells - Bank Holiday so there will be no class
  • 23rd May - Sevenoaks - Hall is in use for EU Elections

We will try to keep you informed of any changes on a week by week basis, but make sure you check the diary or the app before heading out.

X-Tango - The end of an era (and the start of a new one)

As I'm sure you all know by now, last Friday was our final X-Tango Neolonga at the Community Centre in Sevenoaks, as the council are about to start an 18 month refurbishment programme of the hall and it becomes unavailable for use.

Many thanks to all of you that came to give us a good send-off (there are some photos on Tango Underground), and we hope to see you from next month in our new home, Otford Village Memorial Hall.

We started at Sevenoaks Community Centre in early 2017 as a LeRoc Modern Jive club, and then in May that same I taught my first ever tango class in that very hall. We continued as a split LeRoc  / Tango group for a while, and then in 2018 we switched to teaching just Tango. Our classes moved to St Luke's, but we kept the X-Tango events at the Community Centre for as long as possible.

Sevenoaks Community Centre has been as much a part of our tango journey as anything else we've done, and for all it's faults (and it had a few!) we will definitely miss the place. But equally we are really looking forward to starting a new chapter in Otford, so come and join us on the 10th May to launch the new venue.

Social Media

We often talk about our YouTube channel where we post our class reminder videos, but that's not the only place you can find us on social media. We are on...

  • Facebook
  • YouTube
  • Instagram
  • Twitter
  • iPhone App
  • and of course our main website

Please search for TangoSynthesis on all these platforms, and subscribe, like, follow, share, and join in.
